Waiting to find out whether you’re pregnant can be a stressful experience. You may be counting the days since unprotected sex and wondering whether it’s too early to take a pregnancy test.
While home pregnancy tests are highly accurate when used correctly, timing plays a major role in getting a dependable result.
If you have questions about a possible pregnancy, Bright Hope Centers offers free, confidential pregnancy testing, support, and answers to your questions. Schedule an appointment today to get the answers you need.
What These Tests Detect
Many people assume pregnancy can be detected within a day or two of having sex, but that’s not how pregnancy tests work.
After sperm fertilizes an egg, the fertilized egg still has to travel to the uterus and implant into the uterine lining. Only after implantation does your body begin producing the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Because this process takes time, a pregnancy test cannot accurately detect pregnancy immediately after unprotected sex.
When Should You Take a Test?
If your menstrual cycle is predictable, waiting until your period is late usually provides the most reliable result. The Mayo Clinic recommends taking a pregnancy test at least a day or two after you’ve missed your period.
If you don’t track your cycle or your periods are irregular, waiting about two to three weeks after unprotected sex gives your body more time to produce enough hCG for an accurate reading.
Testing too early increases the chance of a false-negative result.
What If You Already Took One?
If you’ve already taken a pregnancy test and it was negative, don’t panic if your period still hasn’t started.
A negative result may simply mean you tested before hCG reached detectable levels. If your period remains absent, repeat the test several days later and take the test first thing in the morning, when your urine is most concentrated.
You can also schedule a free, medically verified pregnancy test with Bright Hope for additional reassurance.
Why Pregnancy Confirmation Matters
A pregnancy test is the first step, but it doesn’t provide a complete picture of your pregnancy.
If your pregnancy test is positive, an ultrasound can determine:
- Whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus
- How far along you may be
- Whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing
This information is valuable regardless of what you’re considering because it provides important insight into your pregnancy and your health. We provide free early ultrasounds following a positive pregnancy test with us.
